Dr. Prathap Kumar
Dr. Prathap Kumar is one of India’s most accomplished interventional cardiologists, widely regarded for his exceptional skill in performing complex coronary procedures. A leading proctor in Chronic Total Occlusion (CTO) interventions, Left Main coronary interventions, calcified lesion angioplasty, and advanced coronary imaging with IVUS and OCT, he is known for undertaking cases declined by many cardiologists across the country. He has performed the highest number of CTO interventions in India—especially retrograde CTO procedures, which only a handful of operators attempt. He is also a pioneer in Zero-Contrast PCI, having completed the largest series of such cases globally and published the maximum data in this field. A passionate teacher, Dr. Prathap Kumar has trained more than 100 cardiologists in coronary angioplasty, many of whom developed mastery by working alongside him in real-world, high-complexity settings. Since 2016, he has performed live case demonstrations at almost every major national and International interventional cardiology conference and has showcased his expertise internationally across Nepal, Bangladesh, Maldives, Belgrade, Germany, Singapore, Egypt, Spain, and Saudi Arabia. His presence is sought after at prestigious global meetings, including TCT, CCT, EuroPCR, SingLIVE, and TCT AP. His flagship Center of Excellence program, held quarterly since 2017, consistently attracts cardiologists from across India, and he pioneered the country’s first comprehensive webinar series for cardiologists during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a visionary educator, Dr. Prathap Kumar founded the Indo-Japanese CTO Club (IJCTO) in 2013—the first dedicated CTO training program in the region. Held annually during the first week of June, IJCTO draws 500–700 participants with its blend of live demonstrations, structured lectures, and hands-on insights. His commitment to advancing education and scientific inquiry also led to the establishment of the Interventional Cardiology Research and Training Foundation (ICRTF). This foundation, born from his dream to elevate India’s standing in cardiovascular research and training, is now running multiple clinical trials and is home to some of the most sought-after training programs in interventional cardiology. Dr. Prathap Kumar has also demonstrated outstanding leadership and organizational acumen. He has held key roles—including Chairman of the National Interventional Council of India—becoming the first Keralite to ever occupy the national position, President of the Indian College of Cardiology (Kerala Chapter) and President of the Interventional Cardiology Council of Kerala. He has served as organizing secretary for several major scientific forums and is currently on the board of Asia Pacific PCI. Known for his trailblazing contributions, he established the first interventional cardiology unit in any cooperative hospital in India, the first cath lab in an ESIC hospital, and the first cath lab in the Maldives through a public-private partnership. He further expanded cardiac care access by setting up cath labs across civil hospitals in Haryana and Uttarakhand and has been instrumental in developing Meditrina Hospitals into India’s largest private-sector angioplasty-performing group, with more than 10,000 procedures annually.
